The Zamfara Ministry of Health has reported 44 deaths from a diphtheria outbreak in the state. According to Dr Yusuf Haske, the State Director of Public Health, there have been 367 clinically suspected cases, with over 320 patients treated and discharged. Laboratory tests conducted at the National Reference Laboratory in Abuja confirmed the presence of the diphtheria-causing organism. The State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has extended school resumption as a result of the outbreak.
