HURIWA challenges FG over petrol subsidy removal

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has challenged the Federal Government's stance that petrol subsidy will not be restored, calling the policy burdensome and urging a review of the energy pricing regime. HURIWA also demanded transparency in the use of funds generated from subsidy removal between June 2023 and December 2025. In a statement signed by National Coordinator Comrade Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko, the group said the subsidy removal announced by President Bola Tinubu on May 29, 2023, lacked sufficient national debate and broad-based consultation. HURIWA rejected the Presidency's position that the subsidy debate was settled, arguing that Nigerians should have a say in policies affecting their livelihoods.
