In 2021, Francis reduced cardinals' salaries by 10 percent and senior officials' by eight percent to alleviate financial strain during the pandemic. The restoration will take effect on September 1, 2026, and will not be applied retroactively. The decree, issued on the Pope's 71st birthday, stated that Vatican institutions will continue to pursue economic sustainability.
