A proposed amendment to the Lagos State Magistrates Law, which seeks to extend the retirement age of magistrates and law officers, has generated controversy. The Lagos State Attorney-General, Lawal Pedro (SAN), defended the bill as a necessary reform to address an unintended consequence of the constitutional extension of High Court judges' retirement age. Pedro clarified that the bill is a Private Member's Bill, not an Executive Bill, and that the policy has been in place since 1997.
