The International Day to Protect Education from Attack is marked on 9 September with the theme 'Can Education Survive Attack: The Resilience of Human Communities'. The occasion is particularly apt for Nigeria as schools reopen for the 2026/2027 session, serving as a painful reminder of a national failure where children are abducted from schools. The Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack recorded at least 8,566 attacks on education worldwide in 2024 and 2025, more than a 40 per cent increase over the preceding two-year period. These attacks harmed at least 10,600 students, teachers, and education personnel, with Nigeria's experience giving this global crisis a particular poignancy.
