The Federal Government has launched an incentive programme targeting pregnant women in 172 Local Government Areas across 33 states to reduce maternal and newborn mortality. The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Adekunle Salako, disclosed this at the national flag-off in Abuja. He noted that Nigeria accounts for close to 29 per cent of global maternal deaths and that a Nigerian woman faces a 1-in-19 lifetime risk of dying from pregnancy-related causes. The initiative aims to encourage early antenatal care, facility-based delivery and postnatal follow-up.
