Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), was attacked by thugs in Makurdi, Benue State, while traveling to the Yelwata community to console families of victims of a June 13, 2025 attack that killed over 200 people. The Benue State government had previously denied him access to the state when he attempted to visit after the incident. During this attack, thugs brandishing dangerous weapons accosted him and chanted 'Peter Obi, go back.' A police report described the scene as tense. The incident raises concerns about thuggery ahead of the 2027 elections.
