Residents of the Akwa Ibom portion of the East-West road have petitioned the Federal Government and other authorities following the deaths of two persons in collapsed buildings. The buildings reportedly caved in under the pressure of flash floods diverted into residential areas during construction of the road project awarded by the Federal Ministry of Works to Gitto Construzioni General Nigeria Limited. One house collapsed when rainfall hit the area at night, killing Isaac Nkenyie, while another victim, Anietie Etito, lost her child in a nearby building that also collapsed. Survivors have been left homeless, and Rita Isaac Nkenyie, widow of the deceased, recounted her ordeal following her husband's death.
