Food scientists, regulators, health professionals, manufacturers, and consumer advocates have called for stronger evidence-based regulation and public education on the use of low- and no-calorie sweeteners (LNCS) in Nigeria. The stakeholders made the call at a workshop held in Lagos from August 31 to September 1, organized by the NIFST Academy and the International Sweeteners Association. The workshop aimed to align global scientific evidence on LNCS with Nigeria's public health, regulatory, and manufacturing realities amid growing concerns over diet-related non-communicable diseases. LNCS are food ingredients that provide sweetness with little or no calories and are used in various products to reduce sugar and calorie content.
