The Western Cape Government has joined the global commemoration of World Ozone Day, also known as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, observed on 16 September. The day highlights the critical role of the ozone layer in protecting life on Earth and the importance of international cooperation in addressing environmental challenges. The ozone layer, located 15 to 35 kilometers above the Earth's surface, absorbs most of the sun's harmful ultraviolet radiation. Without it, increased UV radiation would pose risks to human health, including skin cancer and eye damage, and affect ecosystems, agriculture, and biodiversity.
