Boris Cherney, head of Anthropic's coding tool Claude Code, was involved in an online dispute after developers found workarounds to use Claude Code with cheaper non-Anthropic models, including those from rival OpenAI. Developer Alex Getman used a proxy to connect Claude Code to OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol, and his Anthropic account was shut down fifteen minutes after he typed his first coding requests, he said. Claude Code is popular for its assembled tools that read and run files, search codebases, and run tasks in parallel, but it does not need to run on Anthropic models. Developers are saving money by using cheaper models with the Claude Code harness, and Getman's posts about the ban drew a million views within hours.
