US President Donald Trump has rejected calls for stronger government oversight of artificial intelligence, arguing that tighter controls could undermine America's position in the global technology race. In several posts on Truth Social on Monday, Trump dismissed warnings about increasingly powerful AI systems, describing fears that the technology could eventually threaten humanity as a "HOAX." He also accused opponents of AI expansion and data centres of being part of a "SICK conspiracy" and compared the concerns to previous false alarms over climate change. Trump argued that the United States already has sufficient regulatory and criminal powers to deal with AI companies and maintained that American leadership in the sector must not be compromised. His position comes after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and SpaceX founder Elon Musk backed calls for the industry to slow the development of increasingly advanced AI systems.
