The African Union (AU) has commenced a seven-day pre-election and needs assessment mission in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections. The mission, led by former Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Demeke Hassen, began on September 13 and will end on September 19, 2026. Its aim is to assess the Independent National Electoral Commission's preparedness, identify potential gaps, and provide recommendations to strengthen the country's capacity for credible, transparent, peaceful, and inclusive elections. Hassen noted that the credibility of an election is largely determined by the quality of preparations before voters arrive at polling units.
