Algeria: Threats to resume executions after 30 years severe blow to human rights

Amnesty International has called on Algerian authorities to abandon plans to expand the death penalty or resume executions after more than three decades without carrying one out. The government is examining amendments to the penal code that would broaden the use of the death penalty, following President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's instruction to the Minister of Justice to reintroduce the death penalty for intentionally starting or instigating fires. Amnesty International urges the authorities to establish an official moratorium as a first step towards abolishing the death penalty and to adopt a human-rights centred response to recent wildfires, including effective investigations and accountability without resort to the death penalty.
