The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has grown to 7,200 reported cases and nearly 3,500 deaths across 62 health zones, according to the World Health Organization. The virus is now present in seven provinces, covering an area that spans two time zones, and weekly cases are doubling in parts of North Kivu. Response efforts are being hampered by insecurity, poor road networks and funding gaps, even as UN agencies and partners work with Congolese authorities to tackle the Ebola Bundibugyo virus. Julien Harneis, the UN Special Ebola Coordinator, warned that without adequate resources the epidemic could resurge, describing it as a deadly and massive outbreak.
