A mental health counsellor, Dr. Rosemary Ogedengbe, testified on Tuesday at a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja that children sexually abused by trusted adults may be too frightened to speak about their experiences. Ogedengbe, who works at the Ceceyara Child Advocacy Centre in Gbagada, Lagos, was testifying as the fifth prosecution witness in the trial of lawyer and pastor Olawale Akanni, also known as Bashorun, accused of defiling a minor. Akanni faces an amended three-count charge involving indecent treatment of a child, assault occasioning harm, and defilement before Justice Hakeem Oshodi. Ogedengbe stated she has handled more than 1,000 cases of sexual abuse during her career and holds a doctorate in Guidance and Counselling from the University of Lagos.
