A recent report by the International Telecommunication Union and the World Benchmarking Alliance evaluated the climate performance of 200 digital companies globally using 2024 data. The findings show that leading AI and cloud providers saw their individual emissions rise between 2020 and 2024 due to soaring energy demand and infrastructure expansion. The fifth edition of Greening Digital Companies tracks greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, climate targets, renewable energy use, and climate transition planning. The report concludes that while AI can help address energy needs, it also presents growing challenges.
