Lionel Messi has been named in Argentina's squad for a friendly against Benin Republic in October, which is set to be his farewell to international football. Messi announced his retirement from Argentina duty in August following the country's defeat by Spain in the 2026 World Cup final and after considering his future following the death of his father. The 39-year-old, who captained Argentina to the 2022 World Cup title, said the decision hurt him deeply but that he had given his all. Messi, an eight-time Ballon d'Or winner, is Argentina's all-time leading scorer and most-capped player with 125 goals in 207 appearances.
