Women’s Farming Gap Costs Nigeria $2.3bn Yearly, FAO Warns

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has warned that Nigeria is losing an estimated $2.3 billion annually, about two percent of its GDP, due to unequal access for women farmers to land, finance, technology, agricultural services, and markets. The FAO raised the alarm in Abuja at a high-level meeting and panel discussion marking the 2026 International Year of the Woman Farmer. The event, held at the United Nations House under the theme 'Advancing Women's Leadership and Economic Power in Nigeria's Agrifood System', brought together government officials, development partners, diplomats, and financial institutions. The FAO stated that removing structural barriers could unlock substantial agricultural and economic gains for Nigeria.
