INEC: We Lack Power to Sanction States Imposing Prohibitive Fees on Opposition for Campaign Billboards

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stated that it lacks constitutional powers to sanction state governments imposing excessive fees on opposition parties for campaign billboards ahead of the 2027 general election. As the elections approach, some states have approved high signage fees, which critics say are intended to frustrate opposition parties. For example, Kogi State recently approved fees including N150 million for presidential candidates and N50 million for senatorial candidates. INEC also mentioned that preparations for the 2027 elections are preventing it from responding to an Auditor General's query.
