Nigerian-born scientist Oshiorenoya "Osh" Agabi, founder and CEO of California-based biotechnology company Koniku, is developing technology that combines engineered biological cells with electronics to detect and identify smells. Raised in Lawanson, Lagos, Agabi studied physics at the University of Lagos before continuing his education and research in Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, with a career spanning robotics, neuroscience, and bioengineering. At Koniku, his team has created a system called Konikore, designed to recognize specific airborne chemicals and convert that information into digital data, essentially giving machines a sense of smell. The technology has potential applications in detecting explosives and dangerous chemicals.
