Researchers play down AI apocalypse fears, citing hurdles to creating a killer virus

Warnings of an AI apocalypse have spread since Jacob Coxon, a 27-year-old researcher, quit Anthropic and said it and OpenAI were "gambling with our lives" in the global AI race. Evan Hubinger, who leads Anthropic's alignment stress-testing team, backed Coxon and said he personally believes there is a greater-than-10% chance AI could kill all humans within the next decade. However, other researchers say physical barriers make the bleakest outcomes, such as the creation of a killer virus, less likely.
