Chief Timi Alaibe, a former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), has called for a fundamental restructuring of the Niger Delta economy to shift from crude oil extraction to production, value addition, and regional trade. He made the call on the sidelines of the Niger Delta Investment and Economic Summit in Port Harcourt, organized by the Niger Delta Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Trade, Mines and Agriculture (NDCCITMA). Alaibe noted that decades of oil production have not led to commensurate improvements in the living conditions of the region's people, citing persistent challenges in infrastructure, healthcare, education, potable water, and poverty. He emphasized the need to convert the region's strategic position in connecting Nigeria's natural resources to the global economy into broader economic development.
