A gold mine collapse in southern Sudan has killed at least 82 people and injured dozens more, according to a local administrator who spoke to AFP on Wednesday. Two survivors described an all-night rescue effort that began on Tuesday and retrieved 60 bodies by dawn, with another 22 bodies found on Wednesday. The administrator, who spoke anonymously, said 50 people were injured and an unknown number remain trapped under rubble. The mine is in West Kordofan state, which is controlled by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which has been at war with Sudan's military since 2023. Both sides in the conflict have been largely funded by Sudan's gold trade, valued at billions of dollars.
