National Assembly Transmits Constitution Alteration Bill to 36 State Assemblies

The National Assembly has transmitted the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026 to the Houses of Assembly of the 36 states for consideration and approval. The transmission was carried out by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, on September 16, 2026, pursuant to Section 9 of the 1999 Constitution. The development formally places the proposed alterations before state legislatures, whose resolutions are required before the National Assembly can proceed. Lawmakers are seeking states' resolutions within 30 days, with two-thirds approval needed before amendments can proceed.
