Veteran midfielder Axel Witsel announced his retirement from international football on Wednesday, ending an 18-year Belgium career. The 37-year-old made his 140th and final appearance in Belgium's 2-1 World Cup quarter-final loss to Spain in July. Witsel, who debuted in 2008, was a key player for Belgium's 'golden generation' alongside Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku, and Eden Hazard. Only Jan Vertonghen, with 157 caps, has played more times for Belgium.
