Transport Sector Must Raise GDP Contribution Beyond 4% – Institute

The Chartered Institute of Transport and Logistics (CILT) has called for efforts to raise the contribution of Nigeria's transport sector to Gross Domestic Product beyond the current four per cent, stressing the need for an integrated transport system to drive economic growth. At a pre-conference briefing in Lagos, Dr Kayode Oyesiku, Chairman of the Central Planning Committee of the 2026 CILT National Conference, said transport and logistics were not merely sectoral concerns but the "circulation system" of the national economy. Oyesiku, represented by Prof Ogochukwu Ogomma, Dean of the School of Transport and Logistics at Lagos State University, said the performance of the transport system directly impacts households, businesses and the wider economy. He noted that a fragmented, unsafe, costly or unreliable transport system imposes additional costs, while an efficient system delivers lower costs and higher productivity.
