Afreximbank has advised African countries to strengthen processing capacity, regional value chains, transport infrastructure, and trade financing to capture more value from commerce with China. Africa's trade deficit with China widened by 34.48 per cent to $80.07 billion in the first eight months of 2026, as Chinese exports grew faster than imports from the continent. China's zero-tariff policy may help African countries export more, but it does not address their reliance on raw materials and minimally processed goods. Chinese exports to African countries rose 25.8 per cent to $177 billion, while Chinese imports from Africa increased 19 per cent to $96.93 billion, bringing total China-Africa trade to $273.94 billion, up 23.3 per cent year-on-year.
