Lagos State is expanding its urban-greening efforts, with 13,401 trees planted across its five divisions by June 30, 2026, towards a target of 20,000 trees for the year. Through geo-tagging, monitoring, and local-council custodianship, the initiative seeks to move beyond ceremonial planting to building a greener, more liveable city. The challenge is that trees take time to mature, while the pressures of urbanisation are immediate, and every new road, building, and paved surface can reduce the space available for vegetation.
