Former Central Bank Governor and Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, has warned that financial inclusion alone will not reduce poverty unless Nigeria links its financial system to production, investment, and job creation. Speaking at the launch of the 2026 Access to Financial Services in Abuja, he said financial inclusion should be measured by its impact on livelihoods and economic security, not just the number of accounts opened. He called for policies to attract investment and direct financial resources towards farmers, manufacturers, traders, and other productive sectors. Sanusi noted that financial technology and digital payment platforms provide an opportunity to strengthen the connection between finance and the real economy.
