The Nigerian Navy has applauded the Federal High Court, Uyo, for the conviction and sentencing of nine persons for crude oil theft, describing the judgment as a significant development in the sustained fight against economic sabotage. The convicts were sentenced on 14th September, 2026, to five years’ imprisonment on count one and 10 years’ imprisonment on count two, without the option of a fine. The Navy arrested them on 7th February, 2026, during an intelligence-led operation when they were stealing crude from an oil wellhead identified as ASABO-D in the Ibeno local government area of Akwa Ibom State. A statement by the Naval spokesperson, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, said the conviction was not merely a judicial outcome but a clear demonstration of what can be achieved when operational action is matched by effective prosecution and judicial determination.
