Nigeria is expanding training for health workers on Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) to strengthen HIV prevention efforts. Dr Aminatu Makarfi Umar, a gynaecologist in Kaduna State, emphasised the importance of integrating HIV prevention into routine care for women at increased risk. The National AIDS, Viral Hepatitis and Sexually Transmitted Infections Control Programme convened 80 health workers from 32 states and the Federal Capital Territory in May 2026. With an estimated 1.9 million people living with HIV in Nigeria, the initiative aims to build skills and expand access to quality prevention services.
