No fewer than 33 suspected illegal miners have died in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna, Niger State. The deaths occurred on Wednesday night and the remains were deposited at the Minna General Hospital Mortuary. A reliable source attributed the deaths to an outbreak of diphtheria. Six other arrested illegal miners were brought to the hospital on Thursday for treatment of diphtheria. The NSCDC Public Relations Officer, Mr. Mohammed Rabiu, said he was not in Minna but that the Corps would soon issue a statement.
