2027: Only 10% of N’ Assembly Candidates Are Women As GSAI, CISLAC Blame Parties, Demand Reform

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, only 10.1% of National Assembly candidates are women, according to INEC's final list. The Executive Director of Gender Strategy Advancement International (GSAI), Dr. Adaora Sidney-Jack, revealed that out of 4,408 candidates, only 443 are women. The breakdown shows 115 women out of 1,109 Senate candidates (9.6%) and 328 women out of 3,600 House of Representatives candidates (10.2%). Stakeholders blamed political parties and structural barriers for the low representation, noting a slight improvement from 380 women in 2023 but describing progress as very slow.
