A 420-year-old tortoise at the Palace of the Alaafin of Oyo, known as Baba, has died after a brief illness. Baba was buried, and the Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin, Bode Durojaiye, confirmed the death, stating that Baba was regarded as the oldest indigene of Oyo and represented part of the oral history of the Yoruba race. The tortoise was brought from Oyo-Ile to the present palace and was cared for by two palace officials.
