Kenya has strengthened patient safety for people living with noncommunicable diseases, as highlighted during the commemoration of World Patient Safety Day 2026. Dr Mohamed Janabi, WHO Regional Director for Africa, emphasised that for individuals with diabetes, cancer, heart disease, or chronic respiratory conditions, health care is rarely a single encounter and each interaction should improve health without causing avoidable harm. Dr Neema Rusibamayila Kimambo, WHO Representative to Kenya, noted that globally one in ten patients are harmed while receiving health care, with nearly half of that harm being preventable, and in Africa, the risk is even higher, including up to 20 times the risk of acquiring health care-associated infections compared to other regions. The World Patient Safety Day Conference 2026 in Kenya carried this message forward.
