The office of the Archbishop of Canterbury has withdrawn an interfaith award given to a Muslim cleric who had praised Osama bin Laden. The award was presented on September 11 by Sarah Mullally, head of the Church of England, to faith leaders including Hafiz Muhammad Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi for reconciliation and interfaith cooperation. Ashrafi, chairman of the Pakistan Ulema Council, had in 2007 told AFP that his group was giving bin Laden its highest title for a Muslim warrior. The decision to withdraw the award followed backlash over the original presentation.
