Some suspected illegal miners have died in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Niger State. A statement signed by the Niger State Commandant, Comdt. Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, said the victims were arrested between 15th and 16th September 2026 and were found dead on 17th following a disease outbreak in the cell. The corpses have been deposited at the General Hospital, Minna, for further medical examination to establish the actual cause of death. The NSCDC said the arrests followed a "burst operation" conducted on 15th and 16th September 2026 as part of efforts to rid the state of illegal mining activities.
