An Israeli lawmaker, MK Afef Abbed, has asked the United Nations to review the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu and examine whether recommendations previously issued by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention have been implemented. Abbed made the request in a September 1, 2026 letter addressed to the UN Secretary-General, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Chair-Rapporteur of the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. A copy of the letter was made available to journalists on Thursday. The letter referenced Opinion No. 25/2022 of the Working Group concerning Kanu's arrest and detention, which had concluded that his detention was arbitrary and called for measures to remedy his situation, including his immediate release.
