Nigeria is grappling with a severe diphtheria outbreak, with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention reporting over 10,000 confirmed cases in 2026 alone. Since the outbreak began in 2022, there have been 65,759 suspected cases and 2,229 deaths as of March 22, 2026. Kano, Borno, and Bauchi are among the worst-affected states, and the outbreak highlights the consequences of failing to sustain routine immunization.
