Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has consistently advocated for a single-party or inclusive governing arrangement in Nigeria, as outlined in his book, Constitution for National Integration and Development. He proposed that key elected officials, including presidents, governors, and local government chairmen, automatically participate in the executive structure to reduce disruptive factionalism. Recently, Obasanjo has intensified his critique of representative democracy, arguing it is unsuitable for Nigeria and Africa. He restated this position at the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Democracy Dialogue 2026 in Bauchi last month.
