Aircraft Underutilisation, Revenue Loss to Sunset Airports Worry Airline Operators

Nigerian airline operators have expressed concern over forced flight cancellations, underutilisation of aircraft, and revenue losses linked to sunset airports, which operate only between sunrise and sunset due to a lack of night-landing and lighting facilities. The operators noted that limited flight hours at these airports affect their operations. Nigeria's five major international airports in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano, and Enugu operate 24 hours a day, while most state and domestic airports function as sunset airports. The affected airports include those in Akure, Benin, Ibadan, Ilorin, Kaduna, Maiduguri, Calabar, Makurdi, Minna, Osubi, Sokoto, Yola, Bauchi, Gombe, Dutse, and Kebbi.
