Amazon is planning to expand its same-day fulfillment network from about 85 facilities to more than 1,000 by 2031, according to internal documents reviewed by Business Insider. The project, called Mercury, aims to place inventory within 10 miles of roughly 80% of Prime members in the US. Bank of America analysts wrote in a research note that the plan is an attempt to close Walmart's long-held proximity advantage. Analyst Justin Post said the strategy is less about expanding selection and more about speeding up delivery.
