At least 37 artisanal miners, including teenagers, have died in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna, Niger State. The miners were arrested on September 15 and 16 over allegations of illegal mining. Niger State Governor Umaru Bago confirmed the deaths and suspended the state NSCDC commandant, Suberu Siyaka Aniviye. The commandant had earlier said the suspects died following a suspected disease outbreak, but did not disclose the number of deaths or the disease.
