The federal government has called for a shift from the traditional "take, make and dispose" economic model to a circular economy that can create jobs, attract investment, and strengthen resilience against climate-related disasters. The government said climate change has become a major political, economic, and social challenge, warning that failure to act could lead to escalating costs from floods, droughts, extreme heat, and food insecurity. Minister of Environment Balarabe Abbas-Lawal made the call in Abuja at the Climate Change and Circular Economy Africa 2026 conference, represented by Dr Inyogwa Adeleye, Director of the Department of Climate Change. The government urged Nigeria to seize the opportunities presented by the green economy.
