AI Safety Push Sparks Demand for Watchdog Groups. Critics Doubt Their Independence.

Rising alarm about AI's perils has brought attention to little-known research groups focused on technology safety, while also raising questions about their ability to effectively monitor major AI companies. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman have recently promised to embed evaluators from such outside research organisations inside their companies to help ensure safe AI development.
