British hip-hop artist and producer Sway DaSafo, of Ghanaian descent, has died at the age of 44, just days after celebrating his birthday. The MOBO Awards announced his passing on Instagram, sharing a video of him accepting an award in 2005. Born Derek Andrew Safo in North London to Ghanaian parents, he made history that year as the first unsigned act to win Best Hip-Hop Act at the MOBO Awards, beating major international artists before releasing his debut album. The MOBO organisation paid tribute, noting his special place in their history and the statement his win made about UK talent.
