The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has attributed recent deaths in Ondo State to high methanol intoxication from locally prepared alcoholic and herbal concoctions. Laboratory analysis of samples from affected communities confirmed high concentrations of methanol, a toxic substance that can cause blindness, organ failure and death even in small quantities. A statement signed by NAFDAC Director General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye said 11 of the 15 samples analysed also tested positive for Cannabis indica. The outbreak, first reported in early September 2026 in parts of Odigbo Local Government Area, has recorded 182 cases and 48 deaths, with affected communities including New Town, Odole, Okele, Orita Odigbo, Araromi-Obu and Oniparaga.
