The prevalence of food adulteration and the use of chemicals in food, fruits, and other consumables is raising concerns about food safety and potential public health crises in Nigeria. Recent media reports and social media discussions about chemical applications on various foods, including yogurt, palm oil, bananas, pawpaw, oranges, watermelons, soy sauce, olive oil, chicken, fish, water, and beverages, are causing increased anxiety among Nigerians. Findings show that some farmers, traders, and food handlers use chemical substances to reduce post-harvest losses, prevent insect infestation, prolong shelf life, or improve appearance.
