2027: Where Are the Women?

Ahead of the 2027 general election, final candidate lists from the Independent National Electoral Commission show that women constitute only 9.65 per cent of all cleared candidates, far below the 35 per cent affirmative action target. Out of 4,881 candidates, 471 are women while 4,410 are men. In the presidential race, only two of the 18 candidates are women, representing 11.11 per cent. Groups are calling for a deliberate commitment to gender balance in the electoral process.
